New Swap - Table Runners

Announcing a new swap for BMQG members.....

We will be swapping Table Runners as part of our Holiday Party in December!

Yes, it's only August, but we wanted to give you all plenty of time to make a fabulous table runner for this swap. Finished table runners will be swapped at our Holiday Party at Strawberry Patches on Saturday, December 14th. (Please note, due to the holidays, we are having our meeting/party a week earlier than normal. There will be no meeting on Dec. 21st and no Sew In on Dec. 28th.)

Each swap participant will be asked to fill out a form giving information about color, size, and style preferences. These forms need to be turned in and will be exchanged at our meeting on Saturday, September 21st.

You can make any kind of quilted table runner that you like, but we ask that you keep in mind your partners preferences. Finished table runners should be wrapped and brought to the Holiday Party for exchange. And as always, you may include a little something extra if you'd like, but it is not required.

I will be sending out a group email shortly with the above information and the required form. If you'd like to participate, you may fill out the form and email it back to me at bakersfieldmodernquiltguild (at) gmail (dot) com, or bring it to the September meeting.

August BMQG Meeting

Announcements by Christy: Quilt Pattern magazine, an online magazine, is offering our membership a free four-month subscription. If you're iterested, Christy has the information and code you'll need to enter.

Pacific International Quilt Festival is coming up Oct. 17-20 at the Santa Clara Convetion Center. Info is available at http://www.quiltfest.com/activities.asp?id=7

The Road to California quilt festival is Jan. 23-26 at the Ontario Convention Center. New teachers and classes have been added, including well-known modern teachers/designers: Julie Herman is teaching her Tiny Dancer and Snack Time quilts; Jacquie Gering has a Stitch & Flip class, and both Angela Walters and Lisa Sipes are teaching longarm classes.

Our monthly sew-in is this Saturday, Aug. 24, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Strawberry Patches. Talk, sip, snack, shop - and, oh, yes, sew!

Our September program will feature Pam Gavin demonstrating/sharing ideas for a table runner. Those who would like to participate in a table runner swap (to be exchanged at our holiday party on Dec. 14) can pick up and fill out a form stating your preferences for size and type of runner ... although part of the fun is in the surprise.  :-)  Forms were distributed at the meeting, and will also be available at the sew-in this Saturday and at next month's meeting.

Philanthropic project - We have lots of blocks done for our quilts for foster kids who are aging out of the system. We voted on an official name for our project and it is (wait for it ...) Quilted Hugs! Nicci submitted the winning suggestion and received a Fabulous Prize - really, it said that on the envelope! - from Sweet Surrender bakery.

Mug rugs: We received the mug rugs from our exchange with the Tucson Modern Quilt Guild and selected them from beribboned brown paper bags cleverly crafted by Christy. Such wonderful color and creativity in all the mug rugs ... thank you, Tucson MQG!

Show and Tell: See the photos below for evidence of our amazingly talented members.

Program: To keep our Quilted Hugs quilts moving along, we worked together to arrange blocks on a design wall, bag the rows up and distribute them to members for sewing. Thanks to everyone for your input and willingness to participate. I know sewing machines all over Kern County are humming as I write this.

Don't forget the sew-in at Strawberry Patches this Saturday. See you there!

Name Our Project Contest

Back in June, we launched our philanthropic project by handing out kits to be made into quilt blocks. Thanks to the quick sewing of our members, the blocks were assembled in no time at all! The blocks are well on their way to becoming a beautiful quilt.

Ultimately, this quilt (and hopefully a few more) will be donated to an organization that assists young people who are aging out of the foster care system.

Along with help making the quilts, we need some additional help.....naming our project!

Any member can submit a name for our project by commenting on this post or by sending an email to bakersfieldmodernquiltguild (at) gmail (dot) com.

We will accept suggestions until Friday, August 16th. All members who are present at the guild meeting on Saturday, August 17th will be able to vote for their favorite project name and the one receiving the most votes will be the winner.

And yes, the member who submits the winning name will receive a fabulous prize!

So, put on your most creative thinking cap and come up with a warm, wonderful and whimsical name for our philanthropic project.

July Reminders

Mug Rug Swap - There are still 4 spots open for our Mug Rug Swap with the Tucson MQG. Swap details can be found here. Finished projects are due at the July 20th meeting. If you would like to participate, please leave a comment below. (Current participants: Christy, Laura, Pam G, Nicci, Sandy P, Pam B, Cindy, Gwen)

Meeting - Saturday, July 20th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, at Strawberry Patches. Ditch the heat of the day and join us for a few hours of fun and learning! Pam will be demonstrating a great improv block technique. If you'd like to try your hand at this technique, bring a few 5"x5" neutral squares, some scraps in assorted colors and your sewing machine.

Sew In - Saturday, July 27th, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, at Bolts to Binding. Can you think of a better way of staying cool than spending the day at a fabric shop and sewing with friends? Nope, me neither. Bring a project to work on and a snack to share (optional).

Hope to see you soon!
