Question of the Week

Do you follow color trends, or do you march to the beat of your own drum? If you looked at your stash at this very moment, what color do you have most of?

  1. I follow trends but only purchase what I really like. Don't you just love new fabrics which open up so many new possibilities? I have more brights, which is a big change from a year ago when I bought neutrals and romantic florals. I also have more reds, greys, whites, and modern prints. Orange and aqua prints, linen and linen blends are a favorite as well as prints with birds. I don't collect juvenile/novelty prints since my kids have grown up. More importantly, the quality of fabric must be of the highest quality or I don't usually buy it.

  2. I follow the trends that I like. For example, I've grown to like solids but a little gray goes a long way with me. I have a lot of reds but try to keep my stash versatile so I can pull from it whenever inspiration strikes. It usually strikes when the quilt stores are closed.

  3. I can definitely be inspired by color bundles I find online, but I don't grab stuff just because it's popular. I think aqua is probably a big one in my stash :)

  4. I try to march to the beat of my own drum...it's hard, because of outside influences...if I'm storing fabric for years, I want it to be what I like, not what is the current rage - I have way too much of that fabric! I'm trying to stop the "oh, isn't that cute" impulse buy.
At this moment, my preference is batiks, and I try to keep an even balance of the color spectrum...probably more blues and greens - nature colors. I like timeless.

  5. I do pay attention to trends, but I don't always buy along those lines. I won't buy something just because it's trendy. I've actually been quite surprised by the colors in my stash. I think everyone knows that my favorite color is pink. Surprisingly, it's not the most prevatlent color in my stash. It's blue! Who would've guessed?

  6. Wow I have a much more diverse selection of color then I would have thought before I went and actually looked at it with color in mind. I have changed the way I buy a lot over the last 2 or 3 years, fat qtrs. are history, unless you have a plan for them you will not have enough down the road when they are gone from the stores and your ?? stuck there. I have moved to buying groups, color ways in half yards or more. I place the treasure in a section of my room in which I plan to work out of soon fabrics. I really like to buy for a project that I want to make and not for the “ I better get that before it all gone” thinking and then never use it. I do have some bundles that I may never use, but I do not plan to part with this side of a dirt nap. Since I make prayer quilts and Isolate’s constantly I am able to use up some of them before they begin to age like a fine wine.

  7. I've always done my own thing - dont really notice trends. About two thirds of my stash is hand-dye and of the rest, nearly all of it is solids/pattern-read-as-solid or stripes! I love colour of all kinds, have lots of deep rich colours, not so many pastel; but also lots of greys and blacks. Predominantly I have more purple fabric than anything else. When I have a fabric dyeing session I have to try and stop myself doing any more purples - but there are still happy accidents when Im using up the leftover dye!

  8. Up until I found the MQG, my color palette was pretty wild. I love brights, and I've been collecting Kaffe Fassett fabrics for years! What I didn't have in my stash was good neutrals or orange. Everyone in our guild knows that I hated orange. When it was announced as the color of the year a few years ago, I was like, "Heck no!" Since seeing it used in so many modern quilts, I now like it. I won't say that I love it yet, but I do like it. I've even added some burnt oranges to my stash. Gray is another color that I never used, but now have some of it, too. What I still don't have in my stash, are browns. I might have to work on that a bit. ;-)

  9. I dont know whether or not I follow trends. Actually I guess I do cuz I just bought a TON of FMF and altho I am new to quilting and fabric hoarding, oops I mean collecting, I wasn't very fond of it when I first saw it and quite frankly didnt understand he hoopla. It has grown on me a bit and I do like it better when I see projects using it.

I love color and I love art, and I try to buy only what I love. The problem is that I LOVE a lot! I started out buying FQ bundles so I could get a little of the whole line, but now I am not satisfied because I have wanted to make clothing and need larger quantities. Plus I am afraid to use the FQ of those fabrics I love cuz it will be gone! Hahaha! I am now buying at least a yard of everything and think I will start increasing it to a couple yards.

I have noticed that I have more greens than any other color. I also have about 120 different Kina solids and am constantly working on building my solid stash. I just recently bought a bunch of Art Gallery solids and I love em!

My fabric makes me happy! I love just going into my studio and looking at it all, dreaming of all the posdibilities it holds! I have specific projects in mind for a lot of it, but a lot of it is still waiting on my inspiration. I like to get right on it when inspiration hits which is never
