Question of the Week

This week's question is about shopping for fabric. Do you do the majority of your shopping online or in your local fabric shops? If you shop online, please share your favorite websites.

  1. I definitely support my LFS and buy in the shop and online to the same shop!! Late night shopping is sometimes best for me. I do purchase some items on line when I can't find it local. I've joined an occasional BOM with an online shop just to try something different! It's all good!

  2. I mostly buy from the local quilt shops, but will order online when I need something not available locally. My favorite is Over the Rainbow - overrainbow.com - because she has an extensive selection and good prices. I also like QuiltHome.com, which has lots of modern fabrics, and the Fat Quarter Shop for fast service and good selection.

  3. I like to look touch and think about the fabric, sometimes it talks to me and says buy me and other times not. I sometimes buy online but i'm not normally as pleased with it when I see it in hand, sometimes it has no hand. I have my shop in buellton that sends me a blind collection every month and I work with whatever it is or hold it until its about to mold then give it away. When I do the shop hop I may not buy a thing, but this year I am looking for that "I'll know it when I see it project" I do like specials and discounts as our CANDY is not getting any cheaper these days. Another think that you cannot get on line is that great feeling of going into the "CHEERS" of the fabric stores and many people know your name. how good is that!!!

  4. I think I've only purchased fabric online once. I can't remember what I bought, but the service from Pink Chalk Fabrics was great. I do browse online quite a bit. If I find something I like the look of, I'll track it down locally. Sometimes I find that I get a totally different feeling about a fabric when I actually have it in my hands.

  5. Ooohh, I am going to be different and say I mostly buy online...easier to shop online with little kids, and the fabrics I like are often not carried in stores here. I like

    fabric.com - great sales!
    hawthornethreads.com
    pinkchalkfabrics.com
    etsy.com

  6. I think I do a fair amount of shopping at both! We do have very nice shops in town. That being said, there's a lot of cool fabric that the local shops don't carry. In addition to the sites that Meg has listed, I also frequent these websites:

    fatquartershop.com
    fabricdepot.com
    spoolsewing.com
    cvquiltworks.com

  7. I'm in the same boat as Christie (Mama Said Sew)..... I do tons of shopping online, but not a lot of actual buying. I try to buy local, when I can, but am not opposed to buying online when it is not available locally or a super-great deal and I need several yards.

  8. Same as Meg, I buy most of my fabric online. It's very convenient with kids (& being 45 minutes from Bakersfield), but the biggest factor is usually being drawn to fabrics that the local shops don't carry. I do buy from my fave LQS when possible, though, like I did yesterday to get some yummy FMF grey seeds!! Yay!

Not mentioned is a great resource called quiltshops.com. This is a search engine for worked netbrick-n-mortar shops all over the country, including our very own Strawberry Patches, and is a a great way to find specific fabrics you may be looking for as they don't come up in a Google search.
