A Monday Morning Question

BMQG member, Nicci, asked a question on our Facebook page, and I thought I'd share it with you. Chime in and tell us what you do!

When you make a snuggle quilt for someone, do you wash it before giving it to the recipient?

  1. Yes, I always wash my quilts before I give them to anybody! I love to see that wonderful crinkled look!

  2. I've heard that some people don't wash because they want the person to feel like they're getting something new. I've heard that others wash because they want the person to not be afraid to use the quilt. I usually prewash my fabrics anyway because I don't like the crinkly look and want the quilt to finish smoother. If my quilting (hand or machine) requires marking, then I have to wash it to get the marks out. I just washed some fabric by Blank Quilting last night and it came out virtually fray-free. I was very impressed. But that's another discussion :)

  3. I usually was my quilt before I give them... One is to make sure that the color does not bleed and second is to get the lovely crinkly look... I get it ironed by a professional though - to make it look new!

  4. I always wash mine before giving it away so it has that wonderful crinkled look. I want the recipient to know this quilt should be used and loved.

  5. If it is for a baby or child, then yes, I absolutely wash it before giving it to them! I do not prewash my fabrics, so I like to get all of the "factory" stuff (dyes, smells, etc.) out before a little one snuggles in it, smashes it's face into it, puts it into its mouth. ;-) I also have a cat that likes to sit on whatever I am sewing, so I make sure there is no cat fur on it in case someone was allergic.

  7. If the quilt is for a baby I do not. I don't keep baby detergent on hand anymore and my son was HIGHLY allergic to anything not designed for babies for the first 2 years of life. If it's for an older child/person then yes I wash it before gifting it.

  8. I've always washed my quilts before giving them, because I like the snuggly look. However, Amanda brings up a very interesting point about baby allergies. I'd have never thought of that.
