Question of the Week

What color combinations do you now use, that you originally thought were awful?

  1. One of our original members was collecting blocks for a charity quilt. The color combo for the blocks was to be orange/purple/brown. I thought the blocks would be hideous, but they ended up looking really good! My biggest change in color preference since joining our MQG, is that I now really like orange! I was a total orange hater before that!

  2. I didn't think the orange/purple/brown blocks would work either, but I made several for that quilt and I loved them! I tend to use more brown and gray now. (not together though) They are both great neutrals and go with just about everything. Incorporating solids in my quilts, not just for sashing, is definitely something new for me.

  3. Almost anything goes these days. We have come so far since the early 80's where our quilts were just two to three fabrics. Heaven help us if we used more than a solid, a pin dot and one print! I love that we have gotten so free with our use of color and print. Yesterday we got in a new collection from Moda that had prints with purple and blue. One of our workers commented that she never thought those two colors together would work but she LOVED the combo. To me it's more about value, tone, clarity and personality. If these are correct I think almost any combo can work. Boy, yesterday while working with a sales rep I went through hundreds of fabric samples where in my opinion the designers just missed the mark! Some days ya gottta kiss a lot of frogs...

  4. I used to think orange and blue was not a pretty combination, yet they were prominently featured in the last quilt I made! Who knows, I may eventually jump on the gray bandwagon.

  5. I made a baby quilt with gray/white Riley Blake Chevron fabric on the front, orange Kona (bright!) on the back, and a navy blue polka dot binding. I never would have used such a crazy combination a year or so ago but I love how it turned out.
