Question of the Week

This week's question is about batik fabrics. Do you use them in your modern quilts? What do you like or dislike about them?

  1. Batiks: I really enjoy using Batiks especially in applique and color rich quilts and wall hangings. I have little experience in “modern quilting” and so I have not used them to that end. I like how I have many choices within one piece of fabric to pull out design and color, normally a nice gentle flowing blend of color. There is more to looks at and to discover each time you look at the same fabric. I like that both sides work well, although one side may present itself better than the other which can be true of solids as well.

  2. I agree with Bob! Batik fabrics are often rejected by modern sewists, but I think they may not have had much opportunity to try them. Because batiks are densely woven, the colors can be richly dispersed within a color family. These fabrics are perfect for hand or machine applique since they do not fray. Many outstanding quilters use batiks in art quilts, poseable figures, landscape quilts, and more and batiks can be densely quilted adding to the texture and beauty of a quilt. Modern quilt movement has not yet discovered the fun of working with batiks.

  3. I love working with Batiks, and I have 3 large tubs of them! I'd like to start using them in my modern quilting explorations. I think they are a fabulous addition to modern patterns, and I wonder why modern sewists aren't using them yet?

  4. I adore batiks - they are my biggest stash-buying weakness. I think they are very versatile and can make a basic quilt look quite artsy!
