Name Our Project Contest

Back in June, we launched our philanthropic project by handing out kits to be made into quilt blocks. Thanks to the quick sewing of our members, the blocks were assembled in no time at all! The blocks are well on their way to becoming a beautiful quilt.

Ultimately, this quilt (and hopefully a few more) will be donated to an organization that assists young people who are aging out of the foster care system.

Along with help making the quilts, we need some additional help.....naming our project!

Any member can submit a name for our project by commenting on this post or by sending an email to bakersfieldmodernquiltguild (at) gmail (dot) com.

We will accept suggestions until Friday, August 16th. All members who are present at the guild meeting on Saturday, August 17th will be able to vote for their favorite project name and the one receiving the most votes will be the winner.

And yes, the member who submits the winning name will receive a fabulous prize!

So, put on your most creative thinking cap and come up with a warm, wonderful and whimsical name for our philanthropic project.

July Reminders

Mug Rug Swap - There are still 4 spots open for our Mug Rug Swap with the Tucson MQG. Swap details can be found here. Finished projects are due at the July 20th meeting. If you would like to participate, please leave a comment below. (Current participants: Christy, Laura, Pam G, Nicci, Sandy P, Pam B, Cindy, Gwen)

Meeting - Saturday, July 20th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, at Strawberry Patches. Ditch the heat of the day and join us for a few hours of fun and learning! Pam will be demonstrating a great improv block technique. If you'd like to try your hand at this technique, bring a few 5"x5" neutral squares, some scraps in assorted colors and your sewing machine.

Sew In - Saturday, July 27th, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, at Bolts to Binding. Can you think of a better way of staying cool than spending the day at a fabric shop and sewing with friends? Nope, me neither. Bring a project to work on and a snack to share (optional).

Hope to see you soon!

June BMQG Meeting

There's lots going on in the quilting world these days, both locally and elsewhere, and Christy filled us in on many of these events with these announcements:

The program for our Saturday, July 20 meeting will be a demonstration of an improv technique by Program Chair Pam Gavin.

We have set up a swap of mug rugs with the Tucson MQG. Bring your finished project to the July meeting for show and tell; they will be collected at July meeting and mailed to Tucson MQG. Please include $1 to help cover postage; also include a note with your name and something fun about yourself. You can include a little extra something with your mug such as thread or buttons - something light and not too bulky. However, this is NOT mandatory. If you have not already committed to participating and would like to, please contact Christy.

Our monthly Sew In will be from 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, June 22, at Strawberry Patches. Nicci will bring fabric so that members can work on a block for a philanthropic quilt if they would like. Otherwise, bring whatever sewing project you are working on.

Although our group was fairly small this time, we had several beautiful and innovative projects for show and tell. See photos below.

For our program, Christy demonstrated the Slice and Insert Improv Technique as shown in Jacquie Gehring and Katie Pedersen's book, Quilting Modern. The fabrics used, angle of the slices and how many slices are made allows for many different looks and variations to this block. Lots of fun and very freeing!

Don't forget the sew-in this Saturday, the 22nd, and our next meeting on July 20!

***NEW SWAP***

Many of you have heard about the fabulous time our members had at QuiltCon back in February. One of the best parts of our experience was the people we met, including Elena from the Tucson Modern Quilt Guild. We had a great time getting to know her and have kept in touch. We thought it would be fun for our guilds to get to know each other a bit too. So, we're having a swap with the Tucson MQG next month!

Fabulous, Creative Journals!

So many of the modern quilters are using homemade journals to capture their quilting ideas.  This is not a new idea, but what fabulous, creative journals they are making!  I've made a couple, and received a great one from Nicci at Christmas time.
And then there was the one from a swap buddy (who now lives in Hawaii).
I recently received a journal from buttoncounter (flickr name) and she used Vanessal Christenson's tutorial on the V and Company blog.  Thought I would pass it on.

Here's a picture of the fabulous journal.

Look closely, those are hair ties linked to make the elastic closure! Brilliant!

Hope to see you all at the guild meeting, Saturday, June 15th, 2pm-4pm, at Strawberry Patches.
